Scratch the Surplus is a two-day screening event by Re-make (Charlotte Hale and Jenny Richards) an artist-led project based in Deptford.

Taking artist and writer, Gregory Scholette’s text ‘Dark Matter’ as a starting point this event opens up a discussion around archives, collections and distribution, from our own personal hoardings towards more formal archival collections and the ever expanding terrain of the internet:

‘In an age of enterprise culture, when concepts of labor and class and resistance are being taken apart and put back together again, it is to this shadow or surplus archive that artistic dissidents and rebels now look for inspiration.’Gregory Scholette, Dark Matter (2011)

The event is set in New Cross’s, recently built Big Yellow Self Storage Unit. Within its studio-like storing cells, the space is rid of the customary boxes filled with carefully catalogued, stored objects, and is instead transformed into a black box. Rather than being home to personal archives of material stuff, BYSS will host the immaterial image, screen-grabbed from the accumulating archive of our online clouds and YouTube collated media hits.

The screening programme on Saturday sees work selected by practitioners who are engaged in distribution within specific UK film and video collections including LUX, London, REWIND, Dundee and The British Artists’ Film and Video Study Collection, Central Saint Martins, and Women's Art Library, MAKE. Sunday's programme presents a selection of works by artists that engage with our cultural surplus archive. Moving from scratch video of the 1980s with works by The Duvet Brothers and Gorilla Tapes, to new contemporary work that delves into the vast matter of the internet.
